The soft, convoluted foam design creates high pressure points which provide a gentle, deep-tissue compression, while the low-pressure points help to prevent blockage of vascular flow. Effective treatment of edema requires compression that can get to the deep subcutaneous tissues without obstructing the lymphatic and venous outflow.
The ReidSleeve is the only technology specifically designed to apply effective pressure to the skin, subcutaneous tissue and the connective tissue of the deep dermis, the areas where edema can accumulate and where fibrosis can build up. That is why the high and low pressure exerted by the the ReidSleeve is such an effective method for treating lymphedema.
The ReidSleeve technology works by applying high and low pressure points to the affected area. The high points force excess fluid into the areas of low points, forming channels through which the lymphatic fluid can be removed naturally by the lymphatic and venous systems. Flat compression constricts the affected area, often causing the lymphatic system to obstruct further.
This concept was so unique that it was awarded a patent by the US government.
The Contour uses the same advanced technology but in a lighter sleeve for patients with mild to moderate lymphedema.
The ReidSleeve (U.S.Patents 5,904,145 5,916,183 5,196,231) is made from a soft foam core. This is specially designed to provide a gentle gradient pressure. The pressure exerted on the limb (arm or leg) is controlled by a series of Velcro® straps. This design allows the compression to be precisely tailored to the patient’s needs. The sleeve easily slides over the affected limb and then the compression straps are adjusted.
The outer shell is made of durable, attractive nylon, available in many colors. The inner lining is made of a blend of cotton and lycra to provide maximum comfort while maintaining effectiveness.
Control of edema in the hand and wrist area is critical. The ReidSleeve incorporates conforming plastic plates to provide consistent, effective pressure to this critical area. The data from the original study demonstrates that the ReidSleeve is highly effective at controlling edema in this area. In a 4-week study, edema in the hands of affected patients was reduced by an average of 80%.
A specially designed gauge (U.S. Patent 5,904,145) is used to assess the pressure exerted over any region of the limb. The gauge is as easy to use as a blood pressure cuff. This simple procedure insures that compression applied to the patient’s limb is consistently applied and in the proper range to provide optimal results.
Patients can fit the sleeve in minutes without assistance and have the confidence of knowing they are applying the most effective pressure. As the patient improves the ReidSleeve can be adjusted to the new limb size thereby maintaining the proper pressure range.
OptiFlow Comfort Sleeve
Several years in development and testing, the OptiFlow Comfort Sleeve is the ultimate in comfort and ease of application. It is lighter and cooler than the ReidSleeve® Classic while maintaining the original concept of the ReidSleeve Classic. Simply slip it on for the comforting and consistent pressure you have come to expect from the ReidSleeve Classic. Variable compression is obtained through a unique outer PowerSleeve®.
The OptiFlow Comfort Sleeve is based on the ReidSleeve Tissue Gradient Technology (U.S. Patent 5,916,183). The foam insert provides both high and low pressure points. This patented design concept provides variable tissue pressure, maximizing compression while minimizing the obstruction of normal lymphatic flow. With older technologies, the pressure applied encircled and constricted normal lymphatic and venous flow. Patented Tissue Gradient Technology prevents the generation of this constricting. This unique system provides effective, comfortable compressive therapy for lymphedema.
The outer PowerSleeve is designed to overcome the friction that can build up between traditional garments and the skin. This friction can make it very difficult to apply traditional garments. However, this is overcome by the unique design of The OptiFlow Comfort Sleeve and the materials that are designed to reduce the friction making it easier to slide The OptiFlow Comnfort Sleeve into proper position.
OptiFlow Comfort Plus
This is a slightly more aggressive version of the original OptiFlow CS, but still very lightweight and comfortable. It utilizes denser foam and extends to the base of the fingers, where the OptiFlow CS goes to the wrist, with a separate hand piece. Both the OptiFlow CS and OptiFlow Comfort Plus have slightly different characteristics and each may benefit a patient uniquely depending on their needs. They are lighter and cooler than the ReidSleeve® Classic while maintaining the original concept of the ReidSleeve Classic. Simply slip it on for the comforting and consistent pressure you have come to expect from the ReidSleeve Classic. Variable compression is obtained through a unique outer PowerSleeve®.
The OptiFlow Comfort Plus is a modular design consisting of a base sleeve and an outer PowerSleeve. The base sleeve applies the patented Tissue Gradient Technology to the surface of the extremity while the PowerSleeve, constructed of a special highly elastic fabric is the main source of compression. The compression level with the combination of the main sleeve and one PowerSleeve is approximately 15-20 mmHg. Higher compression can simply be achieved by additional PowerSleeves. Each PowerSleeve raises compression by approximately 8-12 mmHg. The uniqueness of this modular design allows a wide range of compression levels while the ultra low friction of the specially selected fabrics, avoids discomfort in application associated with more traditional elastic garments.
The OptiFlow RM brings the ReidSleeve tissue gradient technology to patients in Ready Made (RM) standard sizing. The OptiFlow RM is less expensive and provides a flexible and effective treatment option for many lymphedema patients. The OptiFlow RM utilizes the Tissue Gradient Technology (U.S. Patent 5,916,183) that has proven so effective in the ReidSleeve Classic.
The upper extremity RM covers from the tips of the fingers to the axilla; the lower extremity unit is from the ankle to groin (or ankle to knee in the half length style). This allows patients to have daytime non-elastic compression while utilizing a compression sock and shoe. For night use we offer the OptiFlow RM foot piece to go with the full or half leg OptiFlow RM.
The OptiFlow RM is a lightweight, cooler and slimmer garment than the ReidSleeve Classic. It is an ideal option for patients with mild to moderate lymphedema.
The OptiFlow RM is also an effective complement to Complex Decongestive Therapy (CDT). The OptiFlow RM can help the patient effectively maintain their edema reduction achieved through CDT.
The OptiFlow EC (U.S. Patent 5,916,183) brings enhanced compression technology to patients and therapists who rely on bandaging to control lymphedema. The OptiFlow EC is an inexpensive and effective addition to the treatment options available to the lymphedema patient. The OptiFlow EC utilizes the Tissue Gradient Technology (U.S. Patent 5,916,183) that has proven so effective in the ReidSleeve Classic.
The OptiFlow EC is also an ideal complement to the ReidSleeve Classic. Many patients obtain additional therapeutic compression during the day by using The OptiFlow EC, especially patients who have been advised by their therapist to undergo an exercise program while using compressive therapy. The combination of the ReidSleeve Classic and the OptiFlow EC allows these patients to maintain the results obtained with the ReidSleeve Classic and even obtain further improvement.
The OptiFlow EC is also an effective complement to CDT. The OptiFlow EC can help the patient effectively maintain the edema reduction achieved through decongestive therapy. Many therapists are now recommending the use of The OptiFlow EC along with compressive bandages during periods between CDT.
The OptiFlow SC (Sequential Compression) is a treatment modality to be used in conjunction with mechanical pumps. The OptiFlow SC applies the gradient tissue technology (U.S. Patent 5,916,183) proven so effective in the ReidSleeve Classic while avoiding the problems associated with standard pump sleeves. The OptiFlow SC significantly reduces the danger of tissue or venous damage during the critical inflation stage of the pump, additionally, the OptiFlow SC maintains a baseline pressure of approximately 8-10mmHg, decreasing the backflow between cycles (See diagram).
Testing demonstrates that the OptiFlow SC increases overall compression 17% per cycle while avoiding high peek pressures.
The Jazz is activity friendly, slimline, lightweight (the arm unit weighs only ~5 ounces on average) and the foam is a mere 1/4” in thickness. The compression comes from the PowerSleeve®, our patented (U.S. Patent No. 6,656,141/7,584,755) modular sleeve design.
The Opera® (U.S. Patent 5,916,183) is lighter and slimmer than the other existing OptiFlow products. The Opera maintains the original concept of the patented tissue gradient technology found in the ReidSleeve Classic. The Opera simply slides on for the comfort and consistent pressure you have come to expect from the ReidSleeve Classic. Variable compression is obtained through the patented outer PowerSleeve (U.S. Patent 6,656,141).

The Opera is also an effective compliment to CDT (complex decongestive therapy). The Opera can help the patient effectively maintain the edema reduction achieved through decongestive massage. Many therapists are now recommending the use of The Opera during periods between CDT.
TheCinch utilizes a removable outer sleeve of Velcro straps to provide compression. TheCinch is applied over a liner, such as our OptiFlow EC and replaces bandaging. TheCinch slides on with remarkable ease and the Velcro straps are secured to apply compression. TheCinch is also a great alternative for patients who do bandage over their one piece foam units, but find themselves short on time some evenings or while traveling.
With the quickness and ease of application of the TheCinch, patients will find themselves to be more compliant with compression.
Accurate and reproducible determination of compression is essential to effective therapy. Pressures that are too high can have a tourniquet effect, blocking the outflow of lymphatic and venous circulation, forcing fluid into the tissue. Pressures that are too low will have little or no effect. To overcome these problems, we have developed the Precise Gauge (U.S. Patent 5,904,145) for use with the ReidSleeve. The optimal compression can be determined by a simple procedure, assuring the patient of the best possible results.
